Steve Goodman Day Announced as The Chicago Sun-Times Runs "Go Cubs Go" Article
Across the great state of Illinois, Lt. Gov. Quinn declared Steve Goodman Day will be celebrated this Friday, Oct. 5th. A Ceremony will be held at the Blue Room (15th Floor) located at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago. The ceremony will begin at 1:30 PM and guests will include Minnette Goodman (Steve's Mother), WGN Radio host Roy Leonard and many others. We love Illinois, but in our opinion, Friday should be NATIONAL / INTERNATIONAL Steve Goodman Day. Anyone want to organize that for us?

Also, Dave Hoekstra, our favorite Chicago journalist, wrote a nice piece about Steve and "Go Cubs Go" in today's edition of the Sun-Times. Click here to read the article.

Chicago Tribune story about Steve Goodman's "Go Cubs Go"
It's the end of September folks and what do ya' know, the Chicago Cubs are on the brink of winning their first division title since 2003! As many of you know, Steve Goodman, one of John Prine's long-time running buddies and best friends, was a huge Cubbies fan. There seems to be a lot of buzz surrounding both the song and the Cubs recently as they make their playoff push. Just this morning, the Chicago Tribune did a great article about the increased interest in both. Click here to read a fantastic piece about Steve Goodman's classic tune "Go Cubs Go".

John Prine Write-up for Cheekwood Photo
John Prine recently selected a photo that was featured at the Cheekwood Museam of Art (see the post below). Here's the caption that accompanies the photo: There is something very compelling about a black and white photograph, especially when the subject is an everyday common experience like walking by a butcher shop.  This photograph brings us back to Paris and our wanders through the side streets, window-shopping for food.  We would daydream about living there and plan what we might cook for dinner that evening.  It also brings back memories of all the delicious meals we have enjoyed in Paris. John likes to check out the meat that locals are eating.  He maintains one can tell a lot about a population based on how their pork chops look.

Cheekwood Museaum of Art Features Photo Selected By John Prine
Cheekwood has invited Nashville residents known in the world of sports, politics, music, entertainment, and education, to browse through the museum’s art collection and choose their favorite work.  Music City Picks presents these choices from our collection.  As part of their assignment, guest curators were asked to write a short response to the work they chose.  The statements, which are included in the wall labels, range from very personal to more scholarly comments.

USA Today Review of John Prine and Mac Wiseman's Standard Songs for Average People
* * * 1/2 of * * * *
Old-fashioned folk

There’s nothing special about Standard Songs for Average People — except for everything. Fashioned after the folk-country albums of the ’50s and ’60s, this collaboration between 60-year-old singer/songwriter Prine and 81-year-old first-generation bluegrass singer Wiseman features understated performances of lesser-known tunes from great American songwriters. The choices are part of the album’s charm, and part of its greatness. Who else — other than perhaps Johnny Cash and producer/raconteur Cowboy Jack Clement, the man who introduced these two — would include Old Cape Cod and Old Rugged Cross alongside Kris Kristofferson’s Just the Other Side of Nowhere and topical songs such as Death of Floyd Collins? These two do, and they sing them as casually, as warmly as only two new, old friends could do. — Mansfield

Dan Reeder will be Performing Live Tonight at the Basement in Nashville @ 9pm.
Here's what the Nashville Scene's Jack Silverman had to say about Dan Reeder:

If Salvador Dali were reborn as a folkie, he'd be Dan Reeder. Playing oddball homemade instruments (his guitar looks like it was pulled out of a Picasso painting) and singing songs that are at once quaint, absurd, vulgar and insightful, Reeder is so his own man that all those hipster freak-folk wankers (you know who you are) look positively prosaic in comparison. Unlike the many singer-songwriters whose apirations to profundity are ultimately a joke, Reeder aspires to be a joker, yet hidden meanings seem to lurk just below the surface of his nonsense rhymes, playfully eluding your grasp.

Lines such as "When I say 'Vietnam' it sounds just like 'Coca Cola,' / I believe most anything as long as it's not real," from the song "Clean Elvis"
feel pregnant with mystery, despite the almost Weird Al goofiness and deadpan delivery. Reeder shares warts-and-all, down-home style with his Oh Boy labelmates John Prine and Kris Kristofferson, but while they're spinning yarns about down-and-out characters, he's singing about waiting 37 years for a cappuccino or, on songs such as "I Drink Beer" and "Pussy Titty", waxing philosophical. And he's a terrific visual artist - anyone who makes a painting with "ART PUSSIES FEAR THIS PICTURE" scrawled across it clearly has a worldview we can get behind. - Jack Silverman

Dan Reeder - ear X-tacy 5/10/2007
Oh Boy Records would like to thank ear X-tacy for having Dan Reeder play for an intimate group of fans on Tuesday evening.  Dan had a great time playing at Louisville’s premier independent music store which carries almost every music genre imaginable in CD, cassette and vinyl formats including many hard-to-find items. "I'm not a musician" were Dan's opening words, but, by the end of the set, he had definitely proved otherwise. The casual ear X-tacy shoppers gravitated towards Reeder as he chanted his "Work Song.”  Thank you to all who came out and made the Dan Reeder ear X-tacy in-Store performance a success!!!

USA Today Review of John Prine and Mac Wiseman's Standard Songs for Average People
* * * 1/2 of * * * *
Old-fashioned folk
